icon Fashion Show for a Cause (2012/5/10)
Tabb High School's (THS) Fashion Marketing Classes hosted their Annual Fashion Show for a Cause on Thursday April 26th. This year's fundraising cause was Cystic Fibrosis. Thirty-eight student and faculty models participated in the show. Admissions and door prize drawings netted $1000 for Cystic Fibrosis. Marketing teacher-coordinator Christina Majka, along with students Becca Mackey and Chanda Lackie, supported "Team Amanda," in honor of Amanda Varnes, who has the disease. "Team Amanda" walked to raise money for Cystic Fibrosis research. The team walked 2 miles at William and Mary Hall on Saturday May 5th and presented the check for the $1000 donation during the reception following the walk. An additional $400 in donations was collected and then presented to the team by Christina Majka.

Congratulations to Melissa Schreiber, a Nationally Board Certified teacher at Yorktown Middle School (YMS). She has been selected from a pool of more than 300 applicants to participate in the Library of Congress Teaching with Primary Sources Summer Teacher Institute for the week of May 21-25, 2012. Each year, the Library of Congress provides the opportunity for a carefully chosen group of K-12 educators to attend one of its seven teacher institutes in Washington, D.C. During the five-day program, participants work with Library education specialists and subject-matter experts to learn effective practices for using primary sources in the classroom, while exploring some of the millions of digitized historical artifacts and documents available on the Library's website. For the last 10 years, Tabb Elementary School (TES) has participated in the Jump Rope for Heart Program, donating more than $114,500 to the American Heart Association. This year's contribution was led by Ciara Varner who collected the most donations ($760) for TES's Jump Rope for Heart.

The Virginia Living Museum (VLM) hosted a fund raiser for adopting a wild animal. The VLM was looking to collect $100 in donations to adopt a raccoon. Jeanette Weinberg and Donna Merkle's classes at Mt. Vernon Elementary School (MVES) competed to see who could raise the most money. Together the classes raised $175.00 for the VLM. Jeanette Weinburg's class raised the most money, $142.00, and will be recognized by the VLM.

Mt. Vernon Elementary School (MVES) students decide which donuts to purchase from Vivian Baggett's PEP class. The PEP classes have been working on a study of Goods and Services. Students studied how a product goes from raw materials to store shelf. They created a plan to set up a school donut shop, decided how to make the donuts, how much money was needed to start, what price to charge, and how to advertise. After expenditures were paid, students determined if a profit was made.

On Sunday, April 29, at Christopher Newport University Campus the Tabb High School (THS) Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) Chapter participated in the Walk for March of Dimes. FBLA members and sponsor Gina Mancuso-Sidhu walked in support of the March of Dimes Walk efforts to raise money for healthier babies. Tabb High's FBLA raised $235.00.

icon Queens Lake Middle Donates Over $1,400 to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (2012/5/4)
Thank you to the Queens Lake Middle School (QLMS) community for donating over $1,400 to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The following classes donated over 100 dollars: Susan O'Hare's sixth grade class, Barbara Poland's sixth grade class, Heather Stark's eighth grade class, Jessica Vaillancourt's eighth grade class, and Thomas Weidinger's sixth grade class. In third place for the most money donated by an A Day homeroom class is Ms. O'Hare's class with an average of $10.27 per student. In second place with the most money donated by the A Day homeroom is Mr. Weidinger's class with an average of $12.06 per person. icon VIMS Visits Grafton Middle Seventh Graders (2012/5/4)
Students at Grafton Middle School (GMS) listened as Sarah McGuire explained the food chain of the Chesapeake Bay. Sarah, from the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) brought preserved specimens of the fish so students could see the sizes of the different fish. Students were able to investigate different specimens such as the anatomy of an eel that can be found in the Chesapeake Bay. This activities, centered around the Chesapeake Bay Ecosystem, was part of a presentation from VIMS during their visit to Kristin Thompson's seventh grade Life Science class at GMS to teach the students about our local ecosystem.

icon Grafton Middle Goes Lavender for a Day (2012/5/4)
Grafton Middle School (GMS) students and faculty renewed their stand against bullying and rudeness by recognizing the 13th anniversary of the Columbine High School shooting on April 20. Shades of purple were seen throughout the school in remembrance of Rachel Scott and one of her favorite colors, lavender. Rachel was the first student killed at Columbine and is whom the program "Rachel's Challenge" is named after.

On a recent sunny Friday afternoon, Tabb Elementary School (TES) celebrated 100% PTA membership. Early in the year, Cheryl Parr, Principal at TES, challenged the school to reach the 100% mark. Having previously kissed a horse for reaching the same goal, she needed something better this year. A "Pie in the Face" proved just the thing. Children purchased chances for the honor of "pieing" their favorite teacher. As a result, over $200.00 was donated to the York County Food Pantry.

icon Grafton Bethel Elementary Clinic Gets a Facelift! (2012/4/27)
Grafton Bethel Elementary School's (GBES) clinic gets a facelift with two new murals by artist Kendra Gilpatrick and her daughters Kayla (senior at Grafton High School) and Hannah (3rd grade). Kendra is the PTA chairperson for the Labels committee at GBES. The PTA also paid for two new beds in the clinic.

icon Congratulations to Tabb High Band Members (2012/4/27)
Congratulations to two Tabb High School (THS) Band students, Senior clarinet player Kathleen Krist, and Junior alto saxophone player Daniel Deskins, who were selected via audition for the All State Virginia Band. Kathleen and Daniel qualified to audition at James Madison University last month after placing at the top of their sections at the local All District Festival in January. They are the first Tabb Students to successfully audition for the All State Band in 7 years. Additionally, congratulations to Bruton High School's Erin Morrow. The All State performance will be held in April, in Richmond.
